A Basic Guide to the Casino Game Blackjack

The game of blackjack is one of the most popular casino games of all time, and here is how to play. Each player is dealt a hand that consists of two cards from a standard deck. These cards are worth their face value except for face cards that are worth 10 and Aces which can be worth one or 11 at the player's discretion. The dealer is dealt two cards with one face-up so that the players can see it. Each player competes against the dealer to try to get the highest total score that is equal-to or less-than 21.

Players have the option of hitting or standing. Hitting means the player receives another card, and standing means that the player is finished with his or her hand and will be receiving no more cards. If a player or the dealer goes over 21, then that player automatically goes bust and loses. However, if a player is dealt 21 in his or her first two cards, then that is called a blackjack and often pays out at a special rate. A normal win pays out at 1:1, but blackjacks can pay out as high as 2:1 depending on the particular variation of blackjack being played.

The dealer has to play according to a special set of rules instead of having the option to hit or stand and he or she pleases. If the dealer's total is lower than 17, then the dealer has to hit. Otherwise, the dealer has to stand. These static rules for how the dealer must play create a situation where a player can form strategies on how to best play his or her hand.

For example, if the dealer is showing a card like a Five or a Six, then he or she is very likely to bust out because of the mathematics involved in cards. Against these types of cards, a player would never want to risk going bust by hitting a hand with a total of 16. Players can learn what is called basic strategy that teaches them all of these kinds of tricks in blackjack about when to hit and when to stand.
